Status Report of Implementing & Enforcing the UST Program in Indian Country

Energy efficiency and conservation is the smartest and easiest first step the Tribe can make. Payback is immediate from the time efficiency upgrades and conservation is implemented.

Goal #1: of the energy efficiency and conservation program is to reduce energy use and costs to Tribal members and the Tribe.

Goal #2: is to minimize environmental impacts of current and future development of Tribal energy projects through energy efficiency, conservation, education, and outreach.

Goal #3: Work with consultants and assist with creating a comprehensive strategic plan for the Nez Perce Tribe which will direct and focus work for energy development for the Tribe.  Moreover, energy planning is critical for empowering the Tribe to be proactive and self-sufficient at a time when energy markets and resources are becoming more volatile.

Ways to Save Your Energy Dollars:

· Change your incandescent bulbs to compact florescent bulbs

· Set your thermostat to 68 degrees

· Use a power strip bar for all your chargers (e.g. cell phones and iPods) -when not charging turn it off—chargers use electricity even when not charging

· Change out air filters on your furnace

· Replace older appliances (e.g. Freezers, A/C units and Furnaces)

· Use a clothes line—sunshine is free

· Insulate your waterheater

· Install a timer on your electric water heater

· Clean the dryer vent to reduce drying time (and a fire hazard)

· Install low flow showerheads

· Turn off the computer when not in use
